FY23 Seed Grant Proposal Submissions Open!

February 7, 2022 The Center for Coastal Studies invites seed grant proposals from members of the Virginia Tech community to increase our institutional capacity in coastal-zone research, extension and engagement, and education. The goal of the seed grants is to form and foster interdisciplinary groups to address research, extension and engagement, and educational needs to better understand and find innovative solutions for complex contemporary and emerging environmental, societal, security, political, and economic issues in the coastal zone. Full story here

Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator opens new space to create opportunity to tackle emerging coastal challenges

February 4, 2022 The Virginia Tech Coastal Collaborator was developed by the Center for Coastal Studies of the Fralin Life Sciences Institute in partnership with the Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Its mission is to apply Virginia Tech human capital, innovation, and research capacity to emerging issues and opportunities in Virginia's coastal zone, including Hampton Roads, the Eastern Shore, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula. Full story here

Center for Coastal Studies Director featured in Changing Ocean Asia epidode

January 31, 2022 Changing Ocean Asia is a monumental project spanning years of work featuring scientists from around the world led by the Earth Observatory of Singapore. This 4-part series, written and directed by Liz Courtney and narrated by Dr Sylvia Earle, looks at the impacts of our changing ocean including, extreme weather, powerful tsunamis, sea level rise, sinking cities and super corals. At least 4 billion people rely on the OCEAN for their livelihood.
Robert Weiss will be featured in episode 3.
Changing Ocean Asia will be available to stream from the 31st January on Curiosity Stream application or any one of their partner platforms including Amazon Prime, Apple TV and StarHub 422 in Singapore. 

Hiring Coastal Resilience Assoc. Extension Specialist

Nov 11, 2021 The Virginia Seafood AREC invites applications for Associate Extension Specialist working in the area of Coastal Resilience. The successful candidate will work with Virginia SeaGrant, the Center for Coastal Studies, GoVirginia and other program member institutions, extension partners, and the private sector to encouraging collaboration to advance innovations in designs, products, technologies, and services to adapt coastal communities to the adverse effects of climate change. Full story here

Galappaththi contributes to IPCC Assessment Report

October 29, 2021  Center for Coastal Studies affiliate and geography assistant professor Eranga Gallappaththi has a new publication in highly-ranked journal Nature Climate Change. This work comes from his role as a contributing author on two chapters of the IPCC 6th Assessment Report. Full story here

Hiring Postdoctoral Scholar

October 13, 2021 The  Center for Coastal Studies invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar in coastal hazards working under the advisement of Drs. Robert Weiss (Geosciences) and Jennifer Irish (Civil & Environmental Engineering). The successful candidate will join a vibrant and interdisciplinary group of faculty and students conducting research on a variety of physical aspects of coastal hazards within the transdisciplinary context of disaster resilience. Candidates with expertise in employing computational modeling and/or data science (e.g., Monte Carlo simulation, hazard statistics, machine learning) to coastal hazards problems are particularly encouraged to apply. Full story here

21-22 Seed Grant Recipients Announced!

June 22, 2021 To increase our institutional capacity in coastal-zone research, extension and engagement, and education. The  Center for Coastal Studies has awarded four seed grants for FY2022. The goal of the seed grants is to form and foster interdisciplinary groups to address research, extension and engagement, and educational needs to better understand and find innovative solutions for complex contemporary and emerging environmental, societal, security, political, and economic issues in the coastal zone. The four projects span a diverse range of coastal issues including community hazard and mitigation strategy messaging, marsh migration decision planning, interdisciplinary research inventory and tracking of endangered species and they promote interdisciplinary team-building to address these coastal issues.  Full story here

Tenure-track Faculty Position in Coastal Engineering at Virginia Tech!
