GRAD 5034 Interdisciplinary Foundations of Disaster Resilience This course uses a project-based learning approach that emphasizes the need for interdisciplinary teams to collaboratively address disaster resilience and risk management (DRRM). The course is designed to broaden the specialized training that students receive from their individual disciplines and improve their understanding of the dynamic interplay among social and cultural impacts, information technology, geological and environmental factors, and engineering issues in preparing for, responding to, and managing disasters to enhance resilience. Students will learn about interdisciplinary approaches to disaster resilience and risk management, including the various theoretical underpinnings of this work, drawing from projects and guest speakers to provide practical examples.

BIT 5474 Computer-based Decision Support Systems This course explains the characteristics, use, and development of decision support systems (DSS) within the context of other business information systems. The process of designing and implementing decision support systems in business is discussed from both theoretical and practical standpoints. Students will learn various ways of measuring the success of DSS implementation as well as the difficulties associated with all such measures. Students will learn to use common software tools to develop a simple DSS and will learn to use the Internet as a decision making and productivity tool.
CEE 5854G Advanced Coastal Engineering Basic wave mechanics principles, surf-zone processes, littoral and sediment processes, shoreline features, astronomical tides, coastal hazards, and functional design of coastal structures.
GEOS 6204 Simulation and Modeling in Geosciences Geosciences research methods range from field and laboratory measurements to computer simulations, and theoretical work. Computer programs help us to prepare and to analyze this complex geoscientific data collected in the field or during experiments. This course covers computer skills in geoscientific research, including programming concepts, construct theoretical model and model transformation to computer programs, critical evaluation of advantages and limitations of computers and computations.
UAP 5214 Natural Hazards Mitigation Planning. Concepts, theory, and practice of resilience-based, climate-change integrated hazards planning. Effects of land, water, soil, and ecosystem management on quality of life for present and future generations. Natural hazards planning process and tools for local communities and policies at state and federal levels.
PAPA 5354 Homeland Security, Response & Recovery Multi-disciplinary policy course focused on emergency response and recovery following catastrophic manmade and natural disasters in the U.S. Emphasis on strategic and operational decision making; response models and strategies; the preparation, response and recovery roles and responsibilities of federal, state, and local jurisdictions; and federal policy alternatives to address the complex resource challenges of multi-jurisdictional response planning and operations execution.
UAP 5784 Economic Development Planning Topics: Community Resilience Examines community economic development and the resilience of communities in the face of various challenges. Focuses on understanding the factors that affect a community's vitality or resilience, the structures that determine how community development operates, and how community development responses are crafted.

BIT 5414 Production and Operations Management in a Global Environment Analysis of the role of operations management in modern organizations. Emphasis will be placed on the interaction of production and operations management with other functional systems in an organization.
BIT 5494 International Operations and InfoTech This course includes concepts and issues critical in the globalization of business operations and information technology. Topics covered include the organization of global operations, cultural and national comparisons, planning global operations, facilities location, product development, technology transfer, global communication links, transborder data flow, international information systems, and other emerging operations and information technology issues.
CEE 4554 Natural Disaster Mitigation & Recovery Causes, mechanisms, classification, and forces associated with tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and landslides. Resistance evaluation for existing ground, facilities and structures. Hazard-resistant design of new facilities. Risk and reliability assessment and decision analysis. Strategies and designs for natural disaster risk mitigation. Emergency response for protection of life and property and restoration of lifelines. Includes an interdisciplinary team project.
CEE 5080 Infrastructure Asset Mgt. Comprehensive systems approach to civil infrastructure system and strategic-level asset management with emphasis on municipal, highway, building, dam, and bridge infrastructure. Course will cover various aspects of strategic-level infrastructure asset management: systems thinking, needs assessment, information technology and GIS data management, risk and reliability engineering, multi-criteria decision making process, infrastructure sustainability and resiliency, and renewal engineering (repair, rehabilitation, and replacement).
CEE 5204 GIS Applications in Civil Engineering Examination of data structures used in geographic information systems. Map projections and coordinate systems used in mapping. Database creation, maintenance, and integrity. Applications of GIS methods for solving civil engineering problems in land management and related areas.

CEE 5584 Geotechnical Aspects of Earthquake Engineering Earthquake basics, causative mechanisms of earthquakes, earthquake magnitudes, ground motions, effect of local soil conditions on motions, building codes. Response of soils to seismic loading, liquefaction phenomena and analysis of pore pressure development, laboratory and in-situ testing for seismic loading. Analysis and design of slopes, embankments, foundations, and earth retaining structures for seismic loading.
CEE 5844 Ocean and Coastal Wave Mechanics Linear wave theory including boundary value problems, wave transformation in shallow waters, long waves, and engineering properties of waves. Introduction to nonlinear wave theories.
CEE 5864 Coastal and Estuarine Morphodynamics Sediment transport in marine environments, shoreline change, bedform evolution and morphodynamics, tidal inlet morphodynamics, barrier island processes, storm erosion, delta development, beach dynamics. Evolution of estuarine waterways and wetland systems.
CEE 5660 Trans Risk, Reliability & Security Transportation risk assessment and computation; evacuation modeling; reliability analysis; infrastructure interdependency analysis; network impact assessment.
CEE 5734 Urban Hydrology & Storm-water Management Development of methods and numerical models for computing surface runoff from developing watersheds; hydraulics of combined sewer systems; urban non-point source pollutant load calculations and best-management practices; control strategies for regional stormwater management; detention basin design for control of urban floods and non-point source pollutants.
GEOS 4154 Earthquake Seismology Seismicity and its causes in the context of plate tectonics; determination of earthquake location, size and focal parameters; seismogram interpretation; seismometry; hazard potential; use of earthquakes in determining earth structure.
GEOS 5154 Strong-Motion Seismology & Seismic Hazard Analysis Introduction to the generation, propagation, measurement and prediction of strong ground motion from earthquakes, focusing on topics of importance to modern earthquake engineering. Effects of finite fault rupture, source directivity and Earth structure on the propagation of seismic waves; methods for developing ground motion time series for scenario earthquakes, statistical models of the earthquake recurrence process; probabilistic seismic hazard analysis.
GEOS 5714G Adv. Volcanic Processes Study of characteristics and mechanisms of volcanic phenomena, including magma dynamics, origin and chemistry of lavas, physics of eruptions, and characteristics of volcanic products, particularly pyroclastic deposits. Includes focus on volcanism as a general planetary process, on terrestrial tectonic settings of volcanism and on volcanic hazards.
PAPA 5254 Homeland Security & Terrorist Threat A multidisciplinary introduction to theory, strategy, decision making, and doctrine of Homeland Security as practiced in the U. S. Describes the threat, nature of current global conflicts in which the U. S. is engaged, America's foreign and domestic policy responses to 9/11, and strategic and operational homeland security functions.
SPIA 5124 Decision Making, Reflective Practice, and Engagement in STEM-H Domains This exciting new course will explore the roles of science, engineering, and technology in policy-making. We will critically examine:
  • Effective collaborative techniques for bringing officials, scientific & technical experts, and other stakeholders (including communities) together to advance decision-making
  • How organizations and institutions make policy decisions, considering the range of interests and priorities, and behavioral, organizational, and ethical factors
  • How we can bridge the theoretical and applied, nurturing more reflective practice
  • The roles of ‘big data’ in decision-making
UAP 5114 Comp. Apps in Planning An examination of a wide range of computer-based techniques that are of value in analyzing urban and regional planning and management problems. Techniques include linear programming, goal programming; modeling of complex systems; and decision modeling.
UAP 5344G Adv. Law for Critical Environmental Areas Examines the legal principles and policy debates involved in the regulation and protection of critical environmental resources. Variable topics including wetlands law and policy, endangered species habitat, open space, forestland and farmland protection, coastal zone management, and floodplain regulation and policy.
UAP 5364 NGOs and International Development Explores theory and cases of non-governmental organizations in international development. Analyzes various roles of NGOs, and their interactions with local communities, government agencies, international organizations, and private businesses. Examines tensions and collaborations between NGOs and other development actors, drawing from cases in environmental, health, and educational policy domains.
UAP 5414 Natural Resources Planning Topics: Urban Environmental Policy, Planning, and Management in Developing and Transitional Countries Emphasizes practical approaches to natural resource management and environmental quality improvements in large cities in developing and transitional countries. Includes development of skills in decision making approaches used in these and other settings.
UAP 5534 NGO Leadership and Governance Major conceptual issues related to developing an understanding of the foundations and roles of leadership and governance of third sector and nongovernmental organizations. Comparison of nongovernmental organizations in the U.S. and around the world. The course is designed to equip students with the capacities to assess and improve organizational governance effectiveness as well as to devise and implement leadership strategies in the complex structural, social and political contexts in which these organizations are typically enmeshed in the United States as well as in other industrialized democracies and in developing nations.
UAP 5854G Advanced Urban Infrastructure Planning This course explores the emerging concepts, principles, and methodologies used to advance sustainable urban infrastructure planning. In particular, it will study national and international cases of infrastructure development.
