MICHAEL K. LINDELL

Emeritus Professor at Texas A&M University and Affiliate Professor at University of Washington, Boise State University and Oregon State University

Dr. Michael K. Lindell is an Emeritus Professor at Texas A&M University and Affiliate Professor at the University of Washington (Urban Design and Planning), Boise State University (Geosciences), and Oregon State University (Civil and Construction Engineering). He has 50 years of experience in the field of emergency management, during which time he has conducted a program of research on the processes by which individuals and organizations respond to nuclear and chemical hazards, as well as floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, and wildfires. He has conducted research or provided technical services to 40 different organizations in the public and private sectors and has been PI or Co-PI on 62 contracts or grants—25 of which were funded by the National Science Foundation.

He spent a number of years providing technical assistance to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission—evaluating emergency plans and exercises, and providing technical assistance in the design of emergency response facilities. He also worked for the Texas Governor’s Division of Emergency Management—directing the inspection of hurricane evacuation shelters, conducting needs assessment for hazard analysis, surveying coastal residents’ hurricane evacuation expectations, assessing community vulnerability, and analyzing evacuation time estimates. Dr. Lindell served as consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency, as a member of the federal Advisory Committee On Earthquake Hazards Reduction, and as a member of New Zealand’s Natural Hazards Research Platform Technical Advisory Group. He has presented to and been a member of panels for the National Academy of Sciences and made hundreds of presentations to scientific societies worldwide.
